Transcript - Cochlear says let's hear it for local legends

THIS week is Hearing Awareness Week but for some local legends the celebrations came a little earlier.

Inner West residents Professor William Gibson, Monica Bray and Faye Yarroll have all been awarded inaugural Cochlear Hearo Awards to acknowledge their tireless efforts to advance hearing health in Australia.

Cochlear launched the annual Hearo awards program to mark the important milestone, "30 years of sound".

Deaf children worldwide have Professor Gibson to thank for giving them the ability to hear.

Prof Gibson has worked with Cochlear implant advancement for more than 30 years, pioneering the use of hearing aid's in your children.

"Without Professor Gibson's pioneering spirit and dedication to hearing health, thousands of people young and old would not be experiencing the gift of sound as they are today," Cochlear general manager Shaun Hand said.

Ms Bray worked closely with Professor Gibson in developing and expanding the research and facilities to adult patients who were not part of the cochlear's initial target audience.

"Her research and work with adults over 70 years of age to ensure they maintain their quality of life through better hearing, is ground breaking and outstanding," Mr Hand said.

Ms Yarroll received the Hearo Award for her tireless efforts in raising awareness and providing hearing opportunities for the deaf community. Her award seems even more remarkable as she has only been a CAN volunteer since April last year.
